Abstract
Objective To assess clinical effects of transcatheter uterine arterial embolization (TUAE) on adenomyosis Methods From Oct 1999 to Jun 2001, TUAE was perfromed on 46 cases with adenomyosis whose clinical symtoms could not be controlled by drugs By using Seldinger′s method, iodine oil and PVA were injected in double uterine arteries High pressure sterilized gelfoam particles were used to embolize the arteries Results After interventional treament, the volume of menstruation decreased 30%-70% for all patients Mean decreasing value was (54 2±20 2)%, t test value 5 85( P 0 01), Anaemia syptomes were relieved 100% in 3 months [mean value of Hb is (126 6±6 5) g/L]; t test value 28 59( P 0 01); Dysmenorrhea of 43 cases showed no pain in 2 months (93 48%), and 3 cases were improved significantly and completely disappeared in 4 months The pain scores and classifications in postoperation were much lower than preoperation, t test value of dysmenorrhea magnitude was 52 44, activety constrained magnitude was 41 51, the pain classification was 103 2( P 0 01) The volume of uterine focus decreased from (247 6 ±116 2) cm 3 to (129 3±56 6) cm 3 (30%-66%) t test value is 2 86( P 0 01) The valume of lesions decreased from (162 6±75 6) cm 3 to (48 2±18 7) cm 3 (32 1%~ 98 6%) t test value is 3 9( P 0 01), The blood flow within the uterine focus decreased obviously which was detected by colour Doppler flow imaging Conclusion TUAE is proved to be thrapeutically effetive for adenomyosis in short term
