Endometriosis is clinically associated with pelvic pain and infertility, with implantation failure strongly suggested as an underlying cause for the observed infertility. Increasingly, studies are demonstrating biochemical and molecular differences between eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis versus those without disease. These differences are believed to contribute, in part, to the establishment of ectopic lesions in the peritoneal cavity and to infertility associated with the disorder. Eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis provides a unique experimental paradigm to investigate molecular mechanisms of reproductive dysfunction and specic markers for this disease, and is well suited to global gene proling.
