This chapter reviews how medical and surgical therapies for endometriosis affect sexual function, focusing on sexual dysfunction in women with different pain presentations, with particular emphasis on deep infiltrating endometriosis and deep dyspareunia. Using an evidence-based approach, it summarizes findings from studies assessing sexual functioning domains (e.g., satisfaction, desire, orgasm) and quality-of-life outcomes, reporting that both surgical and medical treatments may improve aspects of sexual dysfunction in endometriosis patients. The chapter’s key limitation is that sexual dysfunction in this group has not been fully investigated, and it emphasizes the need for further studies. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically, it reviews effects of medical and surgical treatment on sexual function, including deep dyspareunia, in women with endometriosis.

Abstract

Endometriosis is a chronic and progressive disease affecting 1 out of 10 women during reproductive years. The interaction between endometriosis and endometriosis-associated pain is complex, and deep dyspareunia is only a part of global sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction has not yet fully investigated in this group of patients, especially in case of deep infiltrated endometriosis. Surgical and medical treatments may improve sexual dysfunction, although further studies are needed. In this chapter we are dealing with the complex problem of sexual dysfunction of endometriotic patients, using an evidence-based approach.
