Abstract

A practical large-scale synthesis was developed for the preparation of triglycerides of medium-chain length fatty acids without solvent. The combination of the catalyst, partial vacuum and temperature offers ideal conditions for esterification of glycerol with medium chain length fatty acids. This route is a one step procedure. The starting materials are inexpensive, available and easy to handle. The potential utility of this method is exemplified by the production on one kilo scale of high yield (91%) and purity (99.8%) tricaprin.
