Abstract
Abstract Thin-film barrier coating on titanium alloy substrate features a vast range of applications among which aeronautic and marine applications are significant. Talking about 2 very different aspects, whose requirements and application are way apart. Titanium has always been beneficial in both these products applications. The introduction of titanium in aerospace and marine locomotive parts will have significant importance on parameters like pressure withstanding capacity and corrosion resistance. Our immense perseverance is to satisfy the above intent by giving a thin coating on Titanium alloy substrate. We prepared 4 sample specimens of OT-41 alloy and the following materials were coated on them via PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process: TiN, AlcroNa pro, DLC (diamond-like-carbo), and WCC (Tungsten carbide carbon coating) coated for about 2 to 4 microns over the substrate titanium alloy. TiN and AlCrONa coating were done using the arc spray method and WCC and DLC coating was done using the sputtering process. Coated samples are then subjected to corrosion resistance test using neutral salt spray method and wear resistance or abrasion resistance test using pin on disc method. Corrosion’s resistance results mainly depend on the uniformity of coating and wear resistance on the bonding of coated material over a base metal. Any fissure or notches on the coated surface material will result in early red rust detection in turn leading to failure of corrosion resistance and wear resistance is dependent on two major factors: coated material property and its bonding with the base metal. Having lower bonding with base metal makes it easy to erode which fails to wear resistance. Knowing the fact that titanium by nature is a nonreactive metal, it is difficult to coat any material over titanium or its alloys but the above-mentioned coatings were found to have a good bonding with titanium. Further in this research, we will be concentrating on the methodology and results of mentioned tests.
