Thrombocytosis in Thalassemia major

AbstractBackgroundTo investigate underlying cause for thrombocytosis in children suffering from Thalassemia major.MethodsA cohort of (n=41) children suffering from Thalassemia major were included in the study. They had a persistent platelet count of > 400x109/l for a period of three months. Primary and secondary cause of thrombocytosis were sought as the underlying pathologies.ResultIn significant percentage (44%) of children no underlying cause for thrombocytosis was detected.ConclusionIn depth studies are required to find cause of thrombocytosis in children suffering from Thalassemia major.
