Geophysical investigation and study using the geoelectric method (specific resistivity) to detect bitumen mass in the Gachsaran evaporite formation

Abstract

Abstract Geophysical methods are the most widely used scientific methods in the study of subsurface targets in various fields such as oil, water, and mineral exploration, as well as environmental, archeological, and geotechnical engineering studies. Depending on the physical nature of the target of study and field operation conditions, different methods are used in the mining field, including geoelectric, magnetometry, gravimetry, electromagnetics, and very low frequency (VLF) methods. In this article, we address the use of the geoelectric method in deep studies of a bitumen mass in evaporative host rock. The area under study is located in Ilam Province, Iran, northeast of Dehloran city. In this area, oil escapes from the Asmari limestone reservoir rock, and its penetration due to faulting in the Gachsaran evaporative formation has caused the formation of a bitumen mass. According to field studies and investigation of the topographic conditions of the area, four resistivity profiles were designed and measured to cover the depth and sides of the bitumen mass. After data inversion and interpretation of the profiles, the results were in good agreement with the existing geological evidence and can be a suitable basis for future studies.

various fields such as oil, water, and mineral exploration, as well as environmental, archeological, and geotechnical engineering studies. Depending on the physical nature of the target of study and field operation conditions, different methods are used in the mining field, including geoelectric, magnetometry, gravimetry, electromagnetics, and very low frequency (VLF) methods. In this article, we address the use of the geoelectric method in deep studies of a bitumen mass in evaporative host rock. The area under study is located in Ilam Province, Iran, northeast of Dehloran city. In this area, oil escapes from the Asmari limestone reservoir rock, and its penetration due to faulting in the Gachsaran evaporative formation has caused the formation of a bitumen mass. According to field studies and investigation of the topographic conditions of the area, four resistivity profiles were designed and measured to cover the depth and sides of the bitumen mass.
