Problems that can be encountered in adolescents include knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviour related to reproductive health. Their sexual behaviour can reflect their understanding as adolescents regarding their level of future readiness (e.g., long, healthy, happy, prosperous life). This research aims to analyse the relationship between family roles, sexual behaviour and the level of future readiness among adolescents in Indonesia. This research uses secondary data from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey results from the National Population and Family Planning Agency, the Central Statistics Agency, and universities in 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was young men and women aged 10–24 who were unmarried for the last six months and were registered as family members in selected households in Indonesia. Data were analysed using descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis with logistic regression. The result showed that the individual factors associated with adolescents' level of future readiness are age group (0.000), gender (0.018), education (0.000), and adolescent reproductive health (ARH) knowledge (0.000). Family factors associated with adolescents' level of future readiness are parental exposure to ARH (0.000) and implementation of family roles (0.000). The environmental factors associated with adolescents' level of future readiness are the source of ARH information through mass media (0.000) and the source of population information through mass media (0.000). Implementing family roles is the most dominant factor influencing adolescents' level of future readiness. Among this population, almost 70 million people are aged 10–24 years, while, at the age of 15–24 years, around 46 million people are considered the teenage population (BPS 2020 ). Population projection results show that the adolescent population will increase until 2030 and subsequently decrease (BPS et al. 2018) Adolescence is a social, psychological, economic, and biological transition for many adolescents, which is emotionally challenging and involves important choices (Adioetomo and Pardede 2022 ). Adolescents are exposed to behaviour that risks their health, including smoking, drug consumption, and unsafe sex. As such, the impact will affect the adolescent's current condition and future, such as dropping out of school and having poor health status. In line with that, understanding their level of future readiness as adolescents will be related to their current sexual behaviour. In addition, the role of the family as the closest environment to adolescents will influence sexual behaviour and the future of adolescents. It is important to study the characteristics, knowledge of reproductive health, and sexual behaviour in adolescents because the opportunities to achieve the demographic bonus are of concern to both the adolescents themselves, their families and the community, as well as the government. sexual behaviour in this context is being too young, having many partners and not being in accordance with norms (Alimoradi et al. 2017 ). The 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) youth module results indicate that 3.7% of all teenagers between the ages of 15 and 24 engage in sexual behaviour (2% of female adolescents and 8% of male adolescents) (BPS 2018 ). This percentage increased compared to the previous IDHS-Adolescent in 2012 (2%) (BKKBN 2013 ). Meanwhile, the percentage from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey (PPAS) results is 2% for male adolescents and 1% for female adolescents (BKKBN and BPS 2019). However, there has been a change in the age at which most people have sexual intercourse for the first time, namely from 18–19 years old in the 2012 IDHS to 17–18 years old in the 2017 IDHS (BPS 2017 ). There is concern that this may affect the physical, psychological, and social elements of adolescence, resulting in the future incapacity and mortality of the productive generation as a result of teenage pregnancies, depression, and STDs. This study's update combines two data sets, adolescent and family, to produce more thorough findings. Many factors influence adolescents' level of future readiness here, grouped into family, adolescence, and the environment. This research aims to analyse the relationship between: (1) individual or adolescent factors (characteristics, knowledge of reproductive health (knowledge of the fertile period, knowledge of the best age to marry, knowledge of HIV/STIs, knowledge of drug), and sexual behaviour); (2) family factors (Family characteristics, Family knowledge, Implementation of family functions) ; and (3) environmental factors (area of residence, exposure to reproductive health information through the media, exposure to population information through the media) on the level of future readiness of adolescents in optimising the demographic bonus in Indonesia. Methods Data Sources and Participants This research uses a quantitative approach with secondary data sources from the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) Program Performance and Accountability Survey in 2019 using the Youth Questionnaire Module and the Family Questionnaire Module. The target population for this survey is households, women of childbearing age 15–49 years, families and unmarried adolescents aged 10–24 years. The sampling design for this survey was stratified multistage sampling. The first stage sampling frame is a list of villages/sub-districts in Indonesia equipped with information on urban/rural classification. Apart from the city/village classification, the sample frame is also considered when determining the wealth index classification. The second stage sampling frame is a list of clusters in the selected villages. The third stage sample frame is a list of households or the results of listing households in the selected cluster, carried out door-to-door by the enumerator. The sampling design and data processing were carried out by BPS, with a data collection system using the Mobile Collection (MOCO) application carried out by enumerators from universities in 34 provinces. Participants The unit of analysis in this study is young men and women aged 10–24 years who are unmarried, have lived with family for the last six months, and are registered as family members in the selected households. Teenage sampling was determined first based on selected clusters from 514 districts/cities in 34 provinces. The total sample was determined using the probability proportionate to size (PPS) sampling method, determining 35 households from each cluster. Then, of the 67,725 selected households, 67,594 households were found, and 67,370 households were successfully interviewed. The adolescents who were successfully interviewed and became the sample for this study were 41,582 weighted adolescents. Variables Dependent Variables The dependent variable in this research is adolescents' level of future readiness, a composite of several components, including maintaining physical health, avoiding sexual behaviour, preparing financially, building networks, maintaining mental and spiritual health and others. Measurement for each component that makes up an Adolescent's level of future readiness uses the formula by adding the answers to each component with scoring data if Yes = 1 and if No a score of 0 [8]. Then, the scoring results from each variable are added up to form a total score, which is transformed into a score for the level of readiness for the future of adolescents by calculating the following: $$\:Level\:of\:Future\:Readiness\:=\frac{Total\:score-\:minimum\:score}{\:maximum\:score-\:minimum\:score}x100$$ The readiness level for adolescents' future ranges from 0-100. A value of 0 is the lowest level of future readiness for adolescents, and a value of 100 is the highest. The level of level of future readiness of adolescents is grouped into two categories based on composite scores, namely the high category (score ≥ 60) and the low category (score < 60). Independent Variables The independent variables in this research consist of individual adolescent factors and family and environmental factors. Individual adolescent factors include adolescent characteristics (age, gender, education level), adolescent reproductive health knowledge (knowledge of fertile periods, knowledge of the best age for marriage, HIV/STI knowledge, and drug knowledge), and adolescent sexual behaviour. Family factors include the characteristics of the head of the family (level of education, economic status, work status, and family structure), family knowledge (exposure to reproductive health information), and implementation of family roles (reproductive function, economic function, and social and educational roles). Environmental factors in this study include area of ​​residence, exposure to reproductive, and population health information through the media. Measurement for knowledge of the fertile period is measured by making the level of knowledge of the fertile period, including the variable knowledge of when a woman's fertile period occurs, which is given a score of 20, and the variable of knowledge that a teenage girl who has menstruated can get pregnant even if she only has sexual intercourse once, which is given a score of 10. Then, the scores from each variable are added to form a total score, which is transformed into a fertile period knowledge score. Measurement of adolescent knowledge about the best age for marriage and childbirth is measured based on (1) knowledge about the ideal age for marriage for a woman, which should be ≥ 21 years (score 9); (2) knowledge about the ideal age at which a man should marry must be ≥ 25 years (score 9); (3) knowledge that the ideal age at which a woman should have her first child should be ≥ 20 years (score 9); (4) knowledge of the youngest age a woman can give birth safely is 20 years old and the oldest age a woman can give birth safely is 35 years which is given a score of 9. Then, the scoring results from each knowledge are added to form a total score, which is transformed into a knowledge score of the best age to marry and give birth. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and STIs was measured based on (1) ever hearing about HIV-AIDS, which was given a score of 1; (2) knowledge about the dangers of HIV-AIDS, which was given a score of 1; (3) knowledge of how to avoid HIV-AIDS which is given a score of 1 and (4) having heard of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which are given a score of 1. Then, the scoring results are added to a total score, which is transformed into a knowledge score of HIV/AIDS and STIs. Furthermore, the measurement of drug knowledge is based on adolescents' knowledge about narcotics, alcohol, psychotropic and addictive substances (NAPZA), which is given a score of 5. Each knowledge score is grouped into two categories based on the composite score, namely the high category (score ≥ 60) and the low category (score < 60). Adolescent risk behaviour is measured based on the respondent's activities in dating and sexual behaviour, including holding hands, hugging, kissing on the lips, touching and stimulating sexual intercourse. Adolescents are categorised as having behaviour if they carry out at least one activity, from touching, stimulating or sexual intercourse. Economic status is grouped into lower, middle, and upper. Family work status is categorised as working and not working. Family structures are categorised into intact families (if the adolescent lives with both parents) and incomplete families (if the adolescent lives only with the father or mother). Family exposure to adolescent reproductive health information is categorised as yes and no, and implementation of family roles is categorised as good if it carries out at least two of the three family roles (reproductive function, economic function, social function and education) and poor if it only carries out less than two family roles. Areas of residence are categorised into urban and rural. Sources of adolescent reproductive health information and sources of population information through mass media (radio, television, magazines, newspapers and the internet) are categorised into Yes and No, respectively. Statistical Analysis Data were processed and analysed using the statistical software. Data analysis uses descriptive, bivariate analysis uses the Chi-Square test, and multivariate uses a binary logistic regression model. Each variable that has been selected (p < 0.05) will be included in a multivariate analysis to see the factors that influence adolescents' level of future readiness with Adjusted Odds Ratio (AORs) values ​​with 95 percent confidence intervals (CI) in significance p < 0.05. Results Adolescent Level of Future Readiness Table 1 shows the level of readiness of adolescents for the future. Overall, adolescents still lack preparation for the future. Only 18.2% of adolescents have prepared well for their future. Furthermore, based on adolescents' knowledge regarding reproductive health, it can be seen that only 6% of adolescents have high knowledge about the fertile period, and 31% of adolescents have high knowledge about HIV-STIs. Meanwhile, 86% of adolescents have high knowledge about drugs, and 53% have high knowledge about the best age for marriage and childbirth. The results of other descriptive analyses show that the older adolescents are, the better they are at preparing for the future. Adolescents in the 20–24 year group have a better level of future readiness (27%) than those in the 15–19 year age group (23%) and the 10–19 year age group (12%). Furthermore, based on gender, female adolescents have better future readiness (19%) than male adolescents (18%). The higher an adolescent's level of education, the better their level of future readiness. Adolescents with a high level of education have a relatively higher percentage of good future preparedness (25%) compared to adolescents with secondary education (16%) and those with low education (10%). Based on the findings of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square statistical test, adolescents' level of future readiness is signiicantly correlated with their age group, gender, education level, knowledge of fertile periods, knowledge about whether or not to get married, knowledge of HIV/STIs, knowledge of drugs, and sexual behaviour as adolescents (p < 0.05). Family factors on the level of future-readiness Table 3 shows the results of descriptive and bivariate analysis between family factors (family characteristics of adolescents, family exposure to information about adolescent reproductive health and implementation of family roles (reproductive function, economic function, social function and education) on marriage readiness. The majority of families have low education (41%), with working status (95%), middle economic status (45.7%), coming from an intact family (90%), receiving information (79%) and carrying out family roles (78%). Adolescents from families with a high level of education have a relatively higher percentage of good future preparedness (21%) than adolescents from families with medium education (17%) and low education (16%). Adolescents from families with upper economic status have a relatively higher percentage of good future preparedness (21%) compared to adolescents from families with middle economic status (19%) and lower economic status (15%). However, adolescents with families who do not work have slightly higher future preparedness (22%) than those who work (18%). Likewise, adolescents from broken families have higher readiness for the future (20%) compared to those from nuclear families (18%). Other findings from this research show that adolescents whose families are exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health will have relatively higher future preparedness (20%) compared to adolescents whose families are not exposed (11%). Furthermore, adolescents with families who carry out family roles have relatively higher future readiness (22%) compared to adolescents with families who do not carry out family roles (2%). The results of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square statistical test carried out in Table 2 show that the level of parental education, parental working status, economic status, family structure, family exposure to adolescent reproductive health information and the implementation of family roles have a significant relationship with the level of future readiness adolescents with a p-value < 0.05. Environmental factors on Future Preparedness Table 4 shows the descriptive and bivariate analysis results between environmental factors (area of ​​residence, source of adolescent reproductive health information through mass media, source of population information through mass media) on readiness to marry. Of the 41,582 adolescents, the majority of them live in rural areas (41%), have working status (95%), are in middle economic status (55%), know information related to adolescent reproductive health through mass media (79%) and know population information through the mass media (86%). The results of other descriptive analyses show that adolescents living in urban areas have higher readiness for the future (21%) than those living in villages (16%). Adolescents who know information related to adolescent reproductive health tend to be more prepared (21%) for a good future than adolescents who do not know adolescent reproductive health information through mass media (9%). Adolescents who know information related to population tend to be more prepared (20%) for a good future than adolescents who do not know population information through mass media (7%). This correlation has a significance value of p < 0.05. Factors that influence adolescents' level of future readiness. The binary logistic regression findings with adjusted odds ratio indicate how the independent variables affect teenagers' future preparation. According to the results of the bivariate analysis, which examined the Chi-Square value (p < 0.05), all of the independent variables included in the multivariate analysis have a statistically significant connection with the dependent variable. The results of the overall bivariate analysis show age group, gender, education level, knowledge of fertile periods, knowledge of whether to get married, knowledge of HIV/STIs, knowledge of drugs and adolescent sexual behaviour, level of parental education, working status of parents, economic status, family structure, exposure families on adolescent reproductive health information as well as the implementation of family roles, area of ​​residence, sources of information related to adolescent reproductive health through the mass media and sources of information related to the population through the mass media have a significant relationship with adolescents' level of future readiness (p-value < 0.05). The results show that implementing family roles is the most dominant factor influencing adolescents' level of future readiness. Adolescents from families that carry out family roles well (AOR: 11.393; 95% CI: 9.798–13.248) are more likely to have a better level of future readiness than adolescents from families that do not carry out family roles well. Adolescents who know information about the population through mass media (AOR: 1.619; 95% CI: 1.442–1.818) and information about adolescent reproductive health through mass media (AOR: 1.323; 95% CI: 1.206–1.451) are more likely to have a more significant level of future readiness. It is better than adolescents who do not get population and adolescent reproductive health information through mass media. Furthermore, adolescents who have high knowledge about HIV/STIs (AOR: 1.576; CI 95%: 1.480–1.677), fertile period (AOR: 1.421; CI 95%: 1.290–1.565), age should be married (AOR: 1.403; CI95%: 1.324–1.487), drugs (AOR: 1.239; CI95%: 1.110–1.383) have a higher probability of good level of future readiness compared to adolescents with low knowledge. Other multivariate results also show that adolescents aged 20–24 years (AOR: 1.453; 95% CI: 1.308–1.614) and adolescents aged 15–19 years (AOR: 1.300; 95% CI: 1.190–1.420) are more likely to have the level of future readiness for a better future compared to adolescents aged 15–19 years. Based on education level, adolescents with higher education (AOR: 1.403; 95% CI: 1.324–1.487) and secondary education (AOR: 1.304; 95% CI: 1.224–1.508) are more likely to have good future readiness than adolescents with low education. Adolescents whose families are exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health have a higher probability (AOR: 1.313; 95% CI: 1.213–1.421) of being well prepared for the future compared to adolescents from families not exposed to adolescent reproductive health information. Furthermore, other multivariate results show that adolescents who sexual behavioural (AOR: 1.084; 95% CI: 1.004–1.171) are more likely to have better future preparedness than adolescents who are not at risk, and when viewed based on gender, female adolescents are more likely to have good future readiness (AOR: 1.067; 95% CI: 1.011–1.126) compared to male adolescents. Discussion The results show that adolescents aged 20–24 years and those aged 15–19 years are more likely to have a better level of future readiness than adolescents aged 15–19. In early adolescence (ages 12 to 14), self-regulation tends to decrease and then increases during middle adolescence to adulthood (Atherton 2020 ). This occurs due to prioritising goals and theories about adolescent sexual behaviour (Wesarg-Menzel et al. 2023 ). This occurs as a result of goal prioritisation and telecommunications theory. Adolescents who experience a decline in self-control in their early teens may be more likely to engage in this dangerous behaviour. Adolescence is the starting point for many sexual behaviours, including drug use and misuse, violence, vandalism, taking risks with sexual activity, and delinquency (Smith et al. 2014 ; Noël 2014 ; Murray et al. 2021 ). Different from this research, Bozzato ( 2024 ) found no significant variations in future orientation (hopes and worries) between middle adolescence (15–16 years) and late adolescence (17–19 years) (Bozzato 2024 ). Based on gender, female adolescents are likely to have better future readiness than male adolescents. Studies measuring future orientation found that adolescent girls had a stronger future orientation as measured by a lower likelihood of fatalistic beliefs and a higher likelihood of motivation, time perspective and more thoughtful planning (Romer et al. 2010 ). In line with this research, [14] shows that, in general, adolescent girls have more hopes and fears than adolescent boys. This shows that teenage girls think about the future more often than boys. However, research on these differences has yet to show consistent results because they are caused by several factors, such as differences in measures used and definitions used in research. Adolescents whose families are exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health have a higher probability of being prepared for a good future. These results align with research by Saparini et al. (2023), which states a significant relationship between adolescent reproductive health behaviour and information access. According to this, teenagers who have greater access to information are 5.432 times more likely to engage in sexual behaviour related to their reproductive health. Their opinions, attitudes, and actions about reproductive health and future dangers are hence unchanged. Teenagers who lack information may be more inclined to participate in harmful behaviour and may not be as prepared for the future (Murdiningsih et al. 2020 ). Adolescents engaging in sexual behaviour are more likely to be future-ready than those not. These findings contrast the findings of Maslowsky et al. ( 2019 ), who showed that teenagers who focus on the future are less likely to engage in dangerous behaviours impulsively. (Maslowsky et al. 2019 ). Chen and Vazsonyi ( 2011 ) found that the impact of impulsivity on risk behaviour was weaker in adolescents who thought more about their future (Chen & Vazsonyi(Chen and Vazsonyi 2011 ). Adolescents with a strong future orientation may be more motivated to refrain from sexual behaviour to avoid interfering with their long-term goals. Family factors about implementing family roles are dominant in shaping adolescents into adolescents with good personality values. Families, especially parents, can make themselves role models who can be used as examples, and parents can accompany, provide motivation to their teenage children and commit to their behaviour so that their adolescent children have a good future in their behaviour. However, environmental factors outside the family also play a role in forming adolescents committed to their future (Siregar and Harahap 2022 ). Other research conducted by Nurlela et al. (2023) explained that parents who apply authoritarian parenting patterns to teenage girls will positively impact adolescents' daily lives, and adolescents will become achievers (Nurlela et al. 2023). Meanwhile, parents who implement democracy give their adolescents an open mind and can make the right decisions for their future. In contrast to previous research, Rubiyanti et al. ( 2023 ) stated that the results of their study provide an overview and development of the potential of adolescents based on the concept of future orientation for adolescents who have just reached the motivation stage (Rubiyanti et al. 2023 ). For example, the various kinds of potential adolescents have in entrepreneurship only plan until the motivation stage. Adolescents already have interests and goals related to their future orientation in the motivation stage. However, many of them also still need to determine the sub-goals of their main goal and have yet to prepare a plan to realise this goal. Research on the role of the family and adolescent reproductive health with the future orientation of adolescents explains that adolescent abuse (drug use, alcohol) occurs due to lack of parental supervision and minimal instillation of religious values ​​so that the surrounding environment easily influences adolescents. The role of parents is important in shaping adolescents' personality in determining their future (Masud and Astutik 2022 ). The formation of an adolescent's identity is closely related to the future of the adolescent himself. The research results show that parenting style, quality of friendship, and support contribute to commitment. This also shows that the formation of adolescent identity in Indonesia adheres to a collective culture (Muttaqin et al. 2022 ) The results of this study found that adolescents from families who were exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health had a higher probability of being prepared for a good future compared to adolescents from families who were not exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health. Besides information on adolescent reproductive health from parents, media campaigns about health, including reproductive health via radio and TV, play an important role in reproductive health behaviour (Solehati et al. 2019 ). Good information about adolescent reproductive health is hoped to equip adolescents with a healthy lifestyle, prevent sexual behaviour, and encourage family communication about adolescent reproductive health (Diarsvitri and Utomo 2022 ). Furthermore, other research found that there is a positive correlation between the quality of communication within the family and adolescents' independence, life satisfaction and level of future readiness (Bi and Wang 2021 ). Conclusion The study results showed that adolescents who are prepared for the future tend to have characteristics such as being in the age group 20–24 years old, female, having a higher education level, and knowledge about fertile periods, whether to get married, HIV/STIs, and drugs. They also tend to avoid sexual behaviours and come from families that implement family functions well, are exposed to information about adolescent reproductive health, and have access to information about adolescent reproductive health and population information through mass media. Furthermore, based on adolescents' knowledge regarding reproductive health, it can be seen that only 6% of adolescents have high knowledge about the fertile period, and 31% of adolescents have high knowledge about HIV-STIs. Meanwhile, 86% of adolescents have high knowledge about drugs, and 53% have high knowledge about the best age for marriage and childbirth. The results of other descriptive analyses show that the older adolescents are, the better they are at preparing for the future. Adolescents in the 20\u0026ndash;24 year group have a better level of future readiness (27%) than those in the 15\u0026ndash;19 year age group (23%) and the 10\u0026ndash;19 year age group (12%). Furthermore, based on gender, female adolescents have better future readiness (19%) than male adolescents (18%). The higher an adolescent's level of education, the better their level of future readiness. Adolescents with a high level of education have a relatively higher percentage of good future preparedness (25%) compared to adolescents with secondary education (16%) and those with low education (10%).\u003c/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eBased on the findings of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square statistical test, adolescents' level of future readiness is signiicantly correlated with their age group, gender, education level, knowledge of fertile periods, knowledge about whether or not to get married, knowledge of HIV/STIs, knowledge of drugs, and sexual behaviour as adolescents (p\u0026thinsp;\u0026lt;\u0026thinsp;0.05).\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFamily factors on the level of future-readiness\u003c/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTable\u0026nbsp;\u003cspan refid=\"Tab4\" class=\"InternalRef\"\u003e3\u003c/span\u003e shows the results of descriptive and bivariate analysis between family factors (family characteristics of adolescents, family exposure to information about adolescent reproductive health and implementation of family roles (reproductive function, economic function, social function and education) on marriage readiness. Problems that can be encountered in adolescents include knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviour related to reproductive health. Their sexual behaviour can reflect their understanding as adolescents regarding their level of future readiness (e.g., long, healthy, happy, prosperous life). This research aims to analyse the relationship between family roles, sexual behaviour and the level of future readiness among adolescents in Indonesia. This research uses secondary data from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey results from the National Population and Family Planning Agency, the Central Statistics Agency, and universities in 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was young men and women aged 10\u0026ndash;24 who were unmarried for the last six months and were registered as family members in selected households in Indonesia. Data were analysed using descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis with logistic regression.
