The paper studied whether the proliferation marker MIB-1 can predict response to hormonal therapy in endometriosis, using a retrospective cohort of 105 patients treated at a university clinic with a Semm three-phase regimen including six months of GnRH analogs. Endometriosis stage was assessed using AFS scoring, histology with biopsy verification was performed, and immunohistochemistry for MIB-1 in histologically positive lesion biopsies was used to stratify patients into four groups by percentage of staining decoration. Post-therapy response rates increased with higher MIB-1 decoration at primary diagnosis, ranging from 24.4% in no decoration to 95.8% in strong decoration, and the authors report this as a significant association. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically, it evaluates MIB-1 as a predictive marker of success of GnRH-analog hormonal therapy in endometriosis patients.
