Abstract
Objective To study the ultrastructural change in endometrial-myometrial junction associated with adenomyosis. Methods The ultrastructure of endometrial-myometrial junction from 8 patients with adenomyosis and 8 healthy controls was studied using transmission electron microscope. Results Compared with controls, glandular epithelium in adenomyosis presented with dense microvilli on the surface, enlarged and actively functioning mitochondria, but no apoptosis;smooth muscle cells showed irregular alignments, distorted bands, fewer organelles, more mast cells, vacuolated mitochondria, widespread electron-dense particles in the cytoplasm, more surrounding collagen fibers in close adjacency. Conclusion Distorted constitution of endometril-myometrial junction is related to adenomyosis.
