Abstract

The in-vitro studies of the effect of hydroquinone on plasma methaemogtobin!evels was carried out using two human red blood cell genotypes -- HbAA and HbSS, A total of twenty confirmed blood genotypes were used at absorbances of 540nm and 630nm for both erythrocytes. The mean (± S.D) of plasma methaemoglobin of HbSS erythrocytes were 10.83% ± 3.09% (control) while the test blood samples (0,5%hydroquinone) exhibited elevated plasma methaemoglobin levels of 23.59 ±3.094%. The mean ± S.D OF plasma methaemoglobin of HbAA genotype were 1.34% (0.5% hydroquinone respectively.Statistical analysis showed significant different with respect to the HbSS also a significant difference was observed in HbAA genotype(P < 0.05). The result showed that hydroquinone has the propensity to elevate methaemoglobin in HbSS and also in HbAA genotype erythtocytes.
