Exploring the Relationship between socioeconomic attributes and resilience capacity of Murrah buffalo-based livestock production system in changing climatic scenario

Abstract The present study was conducted in farming community who reared specifically Murrah buffalo in their livestock production system for their livelihood. Total 320 Murrah buffalo farmers from 4 district of Trans-Gangetic Plain Region of India were identified and data collected through focused group discussion, PRA tools and face to face interview to measure the resilience capacity and their socioeconomic variables. Statistical tools such as ‘Principal component analysis’ for index development, cumulative square root methods for categorization of respondents and regression analysis were performed for exploring relationship. Result depicted that majority of the farmers have medium level of climate resilience index score i.e. 0.456. Moreover, it was found that farmer’s involvement in social institute such as, gram panchayat, agriculture and dairy co-operative society, self-help group, farmers’ association etc. were effect the resilience capacity of the respondents in changing climatic scenario. Whereas, farmers for seeking information on government subsidies/schemes rely more on village level worker, agriculture development officer, veterinary officer, bank personnel, co-operative official, krishi vigyan kendra scientists, progressive farmers and local money lenders as these provide social safety nets as they are able to provide on time information as sources of adaptation options regarding various climate resilient practices towards climate change. The need for better technology inclusion and access to more formal systems of finance is necessary to increase the overall resilience capacity of households. However, the perceived significance of different indicators of resilience capacity was different across different categories of farming system in different areas.
