While they tend to manifest in adulthood, many have their origins in behaviours adopted during childhood and adolescence. The present study was taken with the objectives to assess the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding Non communicable diseases, to assess the presence of risk factors of NCDs and to educate the adolescent girls regarding Non communicable diseases. Methodology: A population-based, cross-sectional survey among adolescent girls was conducted from April – June 2023 in the urban poor locality of Bangalore. Taking prevalence of Anaemia among adolescents according to NFHS 5 in Karnataka as 49.5%, the sample size was calculated as 230. Results: Knowledge regarding Hypertension/ Diabetes was 62.6%, 16.5% knew about Breast cancer. 18.3% were underweight and 17.4% were overweight/obese, 39.6% had pallor, 42.6% ate junk food every day and 39.1% had family history of NCDs. Education of the adolescents was found to be significantly associated with awareness regarding Hypertension/Diabetes (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the present study the awareness regarding non-communicable disease varies with different diseases ranging from as high as 62.7% for HTN and DM to as low as 9.1% for cervical cancers and presence of risk factors for developing NCDs was high. Since education level of the mothers and the adolescent was associated with their awareness regarding NCDs, there is a need to bring in school as well as community based activities/sessions to improve the NCD awareness among adolescent girls.
