Abstract

In this study, we developed and validated the reliability and validity of a Japanese short version of the IPIP-HEXACO scale. A sample of 406 Japanese participants was used to create a short version consisting of 24 items that assess six personality traits based on the HEXACO model: Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience. The Cronbach’s alpha values for Extraversion (α = 0.79), Agreeableness (α = 0.72), and Openness to Experience (α = 0.73) showed high reliability, while Honesty-Humility (α = 0.60) and Emotionality (α = 0.58) indicated acceptable levels of reliability. Factor analysis confirmed the six-factor structure, and convergent validity was demonstrated through correlations with the HEXACO-PI, especially for Honesty-Humility (r = 0.49, p < .01) and Extraversion (r = 0.72, p < .01). These results suggest that the Japanese IPIP-HEXACO short scale is a reliable personality assessment tool and useful for applying the HEXACO model in Japanese contexts.
