Objectives: to examine the association of CORD with MetS, inflammatory and cardiovascular biomarkers, and its combined effect on health status and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods : a cross-sectional study of 11602 adults of ≥18 years participants in the Study on Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk in Spain (ENRICA) was conducted. Biomarkers were obtained using standardized laboratory techniques. CORD was defined as a diagnosis of chronic bronchitis and/or asthma, MetS was defined according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation, and CVD as a diagnosis of myocardial infarction, heart failure, or stroke. The associations were evaluated using linear and logistic regression models, adjusting for potential confounding variables. Results : prevalence of MetS in subjects with and without CORD was 26.9% and 23% respectively. CORD was associated with a higher frequency of MetS in <65 years (odds ratio[OR]=1.38; 95%CI:1.07;1.77), higher levels of leptin (21.12%; 95%CI: 6.68;37.50) and fibrinogen (3.79%; 95%CI:0.19;7.52) in ≥65 years, and in whole population with higher prevalence of central obesity (OR=1.30; 95%CI:1.06;1.59) and elevated C-reactive protein levels (17.75%; 95%CI:2.67;35.04). People with CORD, with and without MetS, had a worse health status, and a higher risk of CVD when coexisting with MetS. Conclusions : CORD was associated with alterations in inflammatory and cardiovascular biomarkers, higher frequency of MetS in <65 years, poorer health status, and higher risk of CVD when coexisted with MetS.
