This study re-evaluates six cases previously diagnosed as stromal endometriosis to determine their true histogenesis and malignancy. The authors reject the notion that this condition arises from endometrial stromal cells or represents glandular endometriosis without glandular involvement. Instead, they propose that these lesions are angioblastic growths originating from the sphincter structures of uterine veins, classifying them as malignant with a protracted course. Relevance to endometriosis: listed as one indication for GnRH antagonists, though the paper's main focus is uterine fibroids.

Summary On the basis of 6 cases of so-called stromal endometriosis, the morphology, histogenesis, and significance of this peculiar growth of the myometrium are discussed. The concept that endometriosis in the endometrial stroma may occur without involvement of the glands is rejected. The postulated derivation of the tumor from the stromal cells of the endometrium by authors who recognize the neoplastic nature of the tumor is refuted on the basis of the studies undertaken here. The so-called stromal endometriosis is regarded as an angioblastic growth which originates from the sphincter structures of the uterine veins. Accordingly, in lieu of the previous designation the name angioblastomatosis of the uterus is proposed. It represents a malignant growth with a very protracted course.
