Abstract

Endometriosis affects approximately 3% of women of reproductive age. \nThe term endometriosis is applied to a condition where actively \nfunctioning endometrium is found in ectopic situations other than lining \nthe uterine cavity, such as bladder, ovaries, intestines. This tissue \nresponds to monthly cyclical hormonal changes and has no means of \nescaping the body when it has broken down. While normal endometrium \nis expelled as menstrual bleeding, ectopic endometrial tissue remains in \nthe body causing inflammation, pelvic pain, abnormal menstruation and \ninfertility. If left untreated, the condition becomes worse.
