Compound odontoma of the lower mandible associated with a deep impacted canine: case report and histologic examination

Even if odontomas are one of the most frequent odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity. no clinical guidelines have been developed to help the clinicians decide in which specific situations the excision of the lesion may be considered beneficial. In this case report a 16 years old male presenting with a compound odontoma and a deep impacted canine has been treated in two different stages: enucleation with histologic examination of the lesion and then extraction of the canine. We highlighted the importance of an early diagnosis, firstly to prevent the odontoma from increasing in size that could complicate the surgical excision, secondly to avoid the compromising of the impacted tooth, serious orthodontic disturbance or jaw distortions.
