Abstract

Abstract Objectives : 1)To understand the developmental rules and characteristics of arm span(AS), establish the reference range and percentile curve for arm span in healthy children aged 6-13 years in Qingdao. 2)To determine the linear regression equations to predict height by arm span. 3)Arm span/height(AS/H) and the extremities-trunk ratio((arm span+ leg length)/sitting height )are indicators of body proportion. Our objective was to provides their reference data for the screening of a primary growth disorder. Methods : The data were collected from healthy students (n=3351) aged 6-12 years in 7 primary schools in Qingdao. Their height, arm span, sitting height, arm span/height, and extremities-trunk ratio were determined. The percentile curves and Z scores were generated using LMS Chartmarke software. Results: 1) Mean AS from 6 to 12 years increased from 119.49cm to 157.30 cm in boys and from 116.18 to 154.80 cm in girls. Mean AS/H increased from 0.9672 to 0.9915 in boys and from 0.9557 to 0.9837 in girls. Mean extremities-trunk ratio increased from 2.58 to 2.82 in boys and from 2.55 to 2.75 in girls. There were differences in each index between different ages and genders. 2)Sitting height, arm span, and leg length were highly correlated with height (r > 0.95;P <0.05),and the arm span exhibited the strongest correlation.3)The linear regression equations for estimating height of boys and girls were as follows: H=0.895* AS+17.615(boys,R2=0.955),SH =0.895*AS +18.054 (girls,R2= 0.952). Conclusions: 1) AS、AS/H and the extremities-trunk ratio exhibited consistent age-related patterns, with notable gender differences observed across different age groups. 2) AS exhibits a strong positive correlation with height and serves as the most reliable proxy for height.. 3) This study presents percentile curves and Z scores on AS、AS/H and the extremities-trunk ratio for children aged 6-12 years in Qingdao. These findings serve as a valuable foundation for early clinical detection of conditions characterized by abnormal body proportions.
