International Journal of Surgical Pathology 4(2):111-114, 1996 Incidental Extrauterine Stromal Sarcoma in a Patient With Ovarian Carcinoma

Most low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas are intrauterine in origin, and a pri-mary extrauterine location in the mesentery or omentum is extraordinarily rare. Hence, we report a well-documented, low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma of ex-trauterine origin as an incidental finding in a patient who had extensive ovarian in-tra-abdominal carcinomatosis. This case adds to the literature experience in this en-tity and illustrates that such lesions may occur as incidental and unexpected findings in patients with other gynecologic neoplasms. Endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) are rare en-tities, existing as two clinically and histologically different types: low-grade or endolymphatic stro-mal myosis and frankly malignant high-grade stro-mal sarcoma [1]. They usually present as a primary neoplasm of the uterus, where they represent only 0.2 % of all uterine tumors [2]. Extrauterine pri-mary ESS are much rarer and have been described in the ovaries, pelvic cavity, retroperitoneum, and vagina [3,4]. Most cases of extrauterine ESS present as the primary and sole lesion without any accom-panying additional gynecologic pathology.
