Young Person, Parent/Carer, and School Teachers' Understanding of Periods, Period Pain, and Endometriosis

This study examined young people’s and parents/carers’ and school teachers’ understanding of periods, period pain, and endometriosis, alongside experiences of menstrual education and how menstruation affects different aspects of life, to inform development of school-based educational interventions. Using qualitative or survey-based approaches as described in the paper, the authors compared perspectives across these groups and identified gaps in understanding and differences in how menstrual pain and endometriosis were discussed. A key limitation was that the study was designed to guide educational intervention development, so it does not establish clinical causes or treatment effectiveness for menstrual pain. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically assesses participants’ understanding of endometriosis in the context of period pain and menstrual health education in schools.
