Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory gynecological disease affecting over 200 million women of childbearing age. It affects more than 1 in 10 women worldwide. The disease is complex, and its origin has yet to be established. There are different types of endometriosis, which complicates diagnosis. Painful symptoms can be treated using anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and sometimes hormonal treatments. Surgery is also possible, depending on the case. Many patients who find themselves in a situation of medical wandering turn to therapeutic alternatives such as Cannabidiol (CBD). However, its use is the subject of debate in France. The aim of this thesis is to review the current state of knowledge about endometriosis and the current use of cannabidiol in the treatment of endometriotic pain. A great deal of work is being carried out on this subject. Some have analyzed the expression of cannabinoid receptors on endometriotic lesions, while other research focuses on different synthetic or natural cannabinoid receptor agonists or antagonists. Certain results may indicate an action of the endocannabinoid system on the inflammation of endometriosis or, on the contrary, a lack of efficacy compared with the treatments usually prescribed. Nevertheless, the overall picture remains too disparate to draw sufficient conclusions at this stage. To date, there are three clinical studies underway, the results of which could provide enlightening information on the use of CBD in endometriosis.
