Coordinate-Based fMRI Meta-Analyses of Episodic Memory Encoding and Retrieval in Depression
The paper performs three coordinate-based fMRI meta-analyses to compare brain activity in controls versus people with current, remitted, or subthreshold depression (or at risk for depression) during encoding and retrieval of autobiographical and non-autobiographical episodic memories. Across 21 included fMRI studies analyzed with Seed-based d Mapping (N=506 encoding; N=332 non-autobiographical retrieval; N=423 autobiographical retrieval), depression was associated with reduced activity during encoding in the thalamus, caudate, salience network, frontoparietal executive control network, and motor-related areas, and with stage/content-specific retrieval differences: higher right inferior frontal gyrus activity during non-autobiographical retrieval, and reduced right insula/fusiform activity with increased left anterior cingulate cortex and left middle frontal gyrus activity during autobiographical retrieval. The authors report low between-study heterogeneity and no evidence of publication bias, with the main caveat being that the coordinate-based approach relies on reported activation foci rather than raw images.
