Abstract

Abstract Organic agriculture is a growing market worldwide, expanding by 4–6% annually. One of the burgeoning areas in organic agriculture is within Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait; however, there remains a lack of comprehensive data on pricing. Pricing dynamics should be systematically investigated to provide insights that help farmers, consumers, agribusinesses, and policymakers make informed decisions and strengthen market development. This two-year study analyzed the pricing of five key household vegetables in Kuwait—cucumber, lettuce, tomato, onion, and garlic—during the winter seasons of 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 across five major retail outlets. A total of 157 observations were standardized to Kuwaiti Dinar per kilogram (KD/kg) and analyzed using Welch’s t-test to compare organic versus conventional and local versus imported produce. Organic vegetables were all statistically different (p < 0.05) from conventional ones, averaging 4.73 KD/kg (~ USD 15.47) compared to 2.01 KD/kg (~ USD 6.58), yielding a mean premium of 2.48 KD/kg (~ USD 8.10) or 123%. Garlic showed the highest premium (455%), while tomatoes had the lowest (56%). Imported vegetables were also significantly more expensive (p = 0.003), averaging 3.26 KD/kg (~ USD 10.67) versus 2.08 KD/kg (~ USD 6.79) for local produce—a 1.19 KD/kg (~ USD 3.88) or 57% increase. Establishing publicly accessible price reports could improve market transparency, enhance competitiveness, and support government efforts to strengthen local production while offering consumers fairer pricing and promoting sustainable agricultural development.

Introduction Organic agriculture represents a farming system grounded in ecological principles, emphasizing the interaction with natural processes to achieve the sustainable production of safe and high-quality food. In contrast to conventional systems that rely heavily on synthetic inputs, organic farming employs practices such as crop rotation, compost application, biological pest management, and organic soil amendments to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance (Ashari 2020; John & Babu 2021 ; Reganold & Wachter, 2016 ; Sule & Nwagboso 2019 ). This approach contributes to improved consumer health through reduced exposure to chemical residues, while also supporting environmental sustainability by enhancing biodiversity, improving soil structure, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (Gomiero, 2018 ); Raptou & Manolas, 2022 ). Although organic farming has deep traditional roots, the Green Revolution of the mid-twentieth century shifted global agriculture toward synthetic inputs, including chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which substantially increased yields but also caused significant environmental and health challenges such as pesticide poisoning, biodiversity loss, water contamination, and eutrophication (Pimentel, 1996 ). These concerns later renewed interest in sustainable production systems, leading to the establishment of international certification schemes such as USDA Organic in the United States, the Soil Association in the United Kingdom, and BioSuisse in Switzerland, which provide regulatory frameworks that ensure credibility, traceability, and consumer trust (USDA, 2024; Soil Association, 2024 ; BioSuisse, 2024). Globally, organic agriculture has expanded rapidly over the years due to consumers associating organic foods with better health values, environmental support, and enhanced taste, which heavily influences eagerness to pay premium prices (Aschemann-Witzel & Zielke, 2017 ). By 2022, over 96 million hectares were under organic management, generating a market value of approximately USD 142 billion (Willer et al., 2024). In the United States, organic sales increased from USD 3.4 billion in 1997 to over USD 63 billion in 2021, with fresh produce comprising the largest share. Similarly, Europe’s organic market was valued at USD 64.5 billion in 2020, dominated by Germany and France (Schlatter et al., 2024 ). In the Middle East, organic production and consumption are growing steadily. In the Middle East, organic agriculture continues to display considerable growth. Saudi Arabia’s organic market was valued at approximately USD 57 million in 2018 (about €52 million), and packaged organic food and beverages alone reached USD 54.2 million in 2021, with a projected increase to USD 73.2 million by 2025 representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% (Global Organic Trade Guide, 2022 ). More broadly, the Saudi organic food and beverages sector was estimated at USD 3.0 billion in 2024, with forecasts projecting growth to USD 9.1 billion by 2033 (CAGR 11.8%) (IMARC Group, 2025). In the UAE, the organic market was estimated at USD 32.6 million in 2021, expected to reach USD 38.9 million by 2025 (CAGR 4.3%) (Global Organic Trade Guide, 2022 ); other forecasts place the 2022 market value at USD 38.6 million with projected growth to USD 55.1 million by 2029 (CAGR 6.1%) (BlueWeave Consulting, 2023). Collectively, the Middle East and Africa organic food and beverages market generated approximately USD 1.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 11.2% to reach USD 2.54 billion by 2030, with Saudi Arabia leading in regional growth rates (Grand View Research, 2024). Building on this regional momentum, Kuwait too has witnessed increasing demand for organic products, though with unique challenges and market dynamics.Kuwait has likewise witnessed growth in organic consumption, with its market valued at USD 18.3 million in 2020, representing a 20% annual increase since 2014. Consumer surveys in Kuwait highlight health, nutrition, environmental impact, and taste as primary motivators for purchasing organic products (AlTarrah et al., 2024 ; Elmi et al., 2019 ). However, affordability remains a key barrier, as willingness to pay for price premiums is strongly influenced by income levels (AlTarrah et al., 2024 ; Elmi et al., 2019 ). This trend also aligns with broader behavioral studies showing that consumers’ choices around organic foods are influenced by positive drivers such as perceived health benefits and environmental responsibility, while at the same time being limited by higher prices and reduced availability (Tandon et al., 2020 ). Despite this increasing demand, the domestic organic sector remains underdeveloped. At present, only 25 hectares are certified organic under one producer (FiBL, 2024), and most organic products—alongside a significant share of conventional vegetables—are imported due to limited arable land and the absence of national certification standards (Abdullah et al., 2021 ). While the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has initiated efforts to establish unified organic regulations, enforcement is not expected until 2025 (Majlis Al-Wuzara, 2024). In the meantime, many Kuwaiti farms rely on international certification agencies to adhere to EU organic standards. Consumer studies indicate that imported products are often preferred over local alternatives, largely due to perceptions of superior quality and affordability (Shebaib & Hussein, 2024 ). This preference reinforces Kuwait’s reliance on imports for both organic and conventional vegetables, further contributing to notable disparities in pricing and availability between local and imported produce. Given the limited availability of comprehensive data on organic product sales and pricing in Kuwait, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding market potential and consumer purchasing patterns. This study aims to address these gaps by analyzing differences in retail prices between organic and conventional vegetables, while also comparing locally produced and imported vegetables (cucumber, lettuce, onion, garlic and tomato) supplied in supermarkets and online retailers. By examining these dynamics, the research seeks to provide insights that can guide policymakers, inform farmers, and assist consumers in making sustainable food choices. Materials and Methods 2.1. Product and Market Selection This study was designed to assess retail price differences for five vegetables in Kuwait (cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and garlic) due to their importance in daily use and compared on two levels. The first involved evaluating the prices of locally grown organic vegetables against imported organic vegetables. The second examined broader price variations between local and imported vegetables, encompassing both organic and conventional types. Two supermarkets (Sultan Center and Lulu Hypermarket), one natural product retailer (Natureland) and two online stores (Tawseel and Drops) were selected because these outlets sold both locally and/or imported food products that were organic or conventional and accessible to all consumers. The research took place between October 2022 and January 2023, and October 2023 and January 2024. This range was taken since many local products are available during this time period due to Kuwait’s seasonal production times. For the statistical analysis, data were recorded on each product’s price, weight, country of origin, and organic certification status (i.e., whether the product displayed a clear organic label). The data collected were on cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and garlic for their high frequency of household use in Kuwait. 2.2. Price Calculations and Data Standardization All collected data were subsequently cleaned by removing any duplicates, particularly when companies listed similar or repeated products. Prices were then standardized to a per-kilogram basis to allow for meaningful comparisons. Additional categorizations noted whether a product was grown organically or conventionally, and identified its country of origin (Kuwait or imported). To be able to compare all pricing of different crops each vegetable KD/kg was calculated using formula 1. To calculate the price premium percent formula 2 was applied. To calculate the price difference between local and imported vegetables formula 3 was applied. To enhance comparability for international readers, all prices were also converted to USD equivalents. The exchange rate used was based on the average during the data collection periods: 1 Kuwaiti Dinar (KD) = 3.27 USD. All fils/gram values were thus accompanied by USD/kg estimates using this exchange rate, as shown in the results. Conversion timing was carefully aligned with the survey periods (Oct 2022 to Jan 2023 and Oct 2023 to Jan 2024), and the rate was obtained from the Central Bank of Kuwait (2024) historical averages. 2.3. Statistical Analysis All prices collected were grouped and the mean for the duration of the survey were calculated for the two comparisons stated above (organic vs. conventional and local vs. imported). To check if there was a significant difference between the price categories mentioned, Welch's t -test was selected as the primary statistical method to assess price differences in this study due to its robustness and suitability for the dataset. This approach has been effectively employed in similar studies examining food price variation, such as Hepburn, Oluwadero, & Karpyn (2024), which used Welch's t -test to assess changing food prices in the Bahamas. Further emphasizing the application of the Welch’s t -test instead of the standard Student’s t -test which does not account for unequal sample sizes, a critical consideration in this study, as the number of observations varied between categories. For statistical comparisons IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 29) was used for comparing organic price premium percentage to conventional vegetables, and price difference between local and imported products (organic and conventional products were compiled together). Furthermore additional research was conducted to compare international organic price premiums with those in Kuwait to provide a broader view of global pricing patterns. Results and Discussion 4.1. Organic vs Conventional Prices Table 1. Organic and conventional vegetable prices in Kuwaiti Dinar per kilogram (KD/kg) and USD/kg, with their calculated price premiums and percentage differences. Welch’s t-test indicates whether the difference was statistically significant. USD conversions were calculated using an exchange rate of 1 KD = 3.27 USD, based on averages during the data collection period. Crop Organic Sample Size Conventional Sample Size Organic Avg. Mean differences A Welch's t-test confirmed that the price differences between organic and conventional products were statistically significant (p < 0.05) across all five crops surveyed (Table 1). The mean retail price of organic vegetables in Kuwait was KD 4.73/kg (~USD 15.47/kg), compared to KD 2.01/kg (~USD 6.58/kg) for conventional vegetables, resulting in an average price premium of KD 2.48/kg (~USD 8.10/kg), a 123% increase. This trend mirrors global pricing patterns, since organic agriculture often incur higher operational costs due to labor-intensive practices, reliance on approved organic inputs, limited economies of scale, and certification costs (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2020.; Smoluk-Sikorska et al., 2024; Willer et al., 2023). In Australia, a “shopping basket pricing review” for organic products saw a 32% average difference between organic and conventional products (Willer et al., 2023). A study by Smoluk-Sikorska (2024) reported an average organic price premium of approximately 101% across several studied vegetables in Poland (potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, red beetroots, and carrots). In the United States, organic foods have been reported to cost up to 70% higher than conventional alternatives (Brown & Sperow, 2005) (Table 2). These variations suggest that price premiums for organic produce can differ substantially across countries, influenced by crop-specific supply and demand dynamics. Thus, consumer demand and supply chain efficiencies may play a role in price variation across different crops (Gomiero, 2018). Overall higher price premiums can be linked to higher labor costs, pest management challenges, length of the growing period and certification fees associated with organic production (Crowder & Reganold, 2015; Klonsky, 2000; Uematsu & Mishra 2012). 4.1.2. Crop-by-Crop Analysis Cucumber Organic cucumbers had a price of 2.550 KD/kg (~$8.34/kg) and a price premium of 153% compared to their conventional counterpart costing 1.010 KD/kg (~$3.30/kg) with a statistical difference ( p < 0.05) between conventional and organic cucumbers (Table 1). The price premium for cucumbers is relatively high compared with other countries. For instance, in Poland, the cucumber price premium was only 47.21% (Smoluk-Sikorska, 2024), highlighting that Kuwait’s market exhibits a higher price premium. However in the case of the Canadian market, a seven-week market study in 2011 revealed a price premium of 202% (calculated from the raw data from Islam & Colonescu, 2019). When comparing all three countries, organic cucumber price premiums vary widely, with Kuwait positioned roughly at the global average range for organic produce price premiums. Garlic Garlic had the highest organic prices amongst all surveyed crops in Kuwait, and these were statistically different from their conventional counterparts (p < 0.05) (Table 1). The average price of garlic was 9.500 KD/kg (~$31.07/kg) compared to conventionally grown garlic priced at 1.710 KD/kg (~$ 5.59/kg)—a 7.790 KD/kg (~$ 25.48/kg) difference, representing a 455% price premium (Table 1). Although the price premium is exceptionally high when compared to Canada, a price premium of 855% was seen in 2011 (calculated from the raw data from Islam & Colonescu, 2019), the opposite of countries such as Mexico with a price premium of 104% (Brambila-Paz et al., 2025) (Table 2). A significant price markup for organic garlic, in particular, can be attributed to lower yields and stricter cultivation practices (Reganold & Wachter, 2016). Overall, substantial disparities exist among countries, with Kuwait’s price premium falling within a moderate range relative to global figures. Lettuce Lettuce retail value between organic and conventional was statistically significantly different (p < 0.05) with the average of organic lettuce costing 4.140 KD/kg (~$13.53/kg) and conventionally grown lettuce at 1.660 KD/kg (~$5.43/kg) (Table 1). The price premium addition was calculated to be 2.480 KD/kg (~$8.10/kg) or a 149% price premium for organic lettuce (Table 1). In the Canadian market during 2011 the price premium for lettuce was 68.1% (calculated from the raw data from Islam & Colonescu, 2019). In the case of Mexico a price premium of 50% was observed by Brambila-Paz et al. (2025) (Table 2). In this case Kuwait has the highest price premium compared to Canada and Mexico, which could be due to low organic lettuce presence which could be noted from the sample size of only eight organic options compared to twenty one options observed from conventional. Such a high disparity could lead to a low supply leading to higher costing organic produce along with the short shelf life between 3-5 days (Ansorena et al., 2012). Onion Onions showed to have the second lowest average organic and conventional prices of 3.430 KD/kg ($11.21) and 1.090 KD/kg ($3.56),respectively (Table1). The data also resulted in a significant difference ( p < 0.05) between organic and conventional onions with the second highest premium of 214% (Table 1). The price premium is considerably higher compared to Canada, Mexico, and Poland which witnessed a price premium of 47%, 72%, and 85% respectively (Brambila-Paz et al., 2025; calculated from the raw data from Islam & Colonescu, 2019; Smoluk-Sikorska, 2024) (Table 2). Sullivan (2019) explains that price premiums arise when demand exceeds supply, which supports the hypothesis that limited availability of organic onions in Kuwait enables retailers to apply a substantially higher markup compared to other countries where supply is more sufficient leading to higher price premiums. Tomato The lowest price premium was found in tomatoes with an organic average price of 4.730 KD/kg ($15.47) and conventional price of 2.010 KD/kg ($6.58) , a 2.480 KD/kg ($8.10) difference (Table 1). Although the price premium was 56% there was still a significant difference (p < 0.05) between organic and conventional products (Table 1). Results of the survey differed from other countries such as Canada, Mexico and Poland which had a price premium for organic tomatoes of 156.2% (grape tomatoes and tomatoes), 207% (salad tomatoes) 122.17% (Brambila-Paz et al. , 2025; calculated from the raw data from Islam & Colonescu, 2019; Smoluk-Sikorska, 2024) (Table 2). Difference in price premiums could mainly be due to the type of tomato being retailed since the survey focused on all organic tomatoes available in the market. 4.2. Local vs International Table 3. Price comparison between local and imported vegetables in Kuwait, presented in Kuwaiti Dinar per kilogram (KD/kg) and USD/kg, along with calculated price premiums and percentage differences. Price values were converted from Fils/gram using the rate of 1 KD = 3.27 USD. Welch’s t-test indicates whether the price difference is statistically significant (p < 0.05). Vegetable N (Local) N (Imported) Mean Local Price (KD/kg) Mean Imported Price (KD/kg) Price Difference (KD/kg) Price Difference (%) Welch's t-test (p-value) Cucumber 17 0 1.462 ($~4.78) - - - - Garlic 0 19 - 4.172 (~$13.64) - - - Lettuce 9 20 1.261 ($~4.12) 2.835 (~$9.27) 1.574 (~$5.15) 124.79 p0.05 Mean 49 108 2.075 (~$6.79) 3.263 (~$10.67) 1.188 (~$3.88) 57.25 p<0.05 4.2.1. Mean Difference Prices between local and imported vegetables were significantly different overall. Locally produced vegetables averaged 2.075 KD/kg (~$6.79/kg), while imported vegetables averaged 3.263 KD/kg (~$10.67/kg), a difference of 1.188 KD/kg (~$3.88/kg), representing a 57% increase (Table 3). Welch’s t-test confirmed this difference as statistically significant (p = 0.003). These findings suggest that transportation costs (such as air freight for perishable goods), perceived quality, and the availability of specific imported varieties contribute to the higher price of imported produce. This contrasts with the perceptions reported by Shebaib and Hussein (2024), where participants claimed imported produce was often cheaper than local. It is important to note, however, that local vegetable prices in Kuwait may vary seasonally, particularly during the summer when extreme heat limits availability. In Kuwait both local and imported products can either be sold directly to the consumer or sold at vegetable auctions such as the Forda, where companies can bid and purchase vegetables in bulk. 4.2.2. Crop-by-Crop Analysis Cucumber Cucumbers were the only crop with exclusively local data in this survey and could not be compared for price differences during the duration of the survey. Locally produced cucumbers averaged 1.462 KD/kg (~$4.78/kg), with no imported samples available for comparison. Kuwait’s high self-sufficiency in cucumber production (~98%) likely explains this; imports in 2019 totaled only 1,838 tons (Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs & Fish Resources (PAAF), 2020). As such, cucumbers represent one of the few vegetables where the domestic supply nearly meets demand and low dependence on imports. Lettuce Imported lettuce was significantly more expensive than locally produced lettuce (p = 0.021). Imported lettuce averaged 2.835 KD/kg (~$9.27/kg), while locally produced lettuce averaged 1.261 KD/kg (~$4.12/kg), a difference of 1.574 KD/kg (~$5.15/kg), or a 125% increase. Despite local production covering about 44% of national demand (PAAF, 2020), imported lettuce commands higher prices, likely due to its perceived superior quality, specialized varieties, and availability in seasons when local supply is constrained. The perishable nature of lettuce also increases retailer costs due to higher restock rates (Ansorena et al., 2012). Garlic Garlic emerged as the highest-priced imported vegetable, averaging 4.172 KD/kg (~$13.64/kg). No local garlic was available during the survey, likely due to seasonal factors and limited production. Garlic requires a six-month growing cycle when planted in November or December with harvest times in May when the survey was not conducted, limiting local market availability. In 2019, Kuwait produced only 623 tons, of which 146 tons were exported, while 11,469 tons were imported — meaning imports accounted for 95% of total consumption (PAAF, 2020). China alone supplied 10,973 tons, or ~95% of imports in 2019 (World Bank, 2019). This heavy dependence on imports explains the low production of garlic locally. Tomato Tomatoes showed higher average prices for imports (4.019 KD/kg, ~$13.14/kg) compared to local tomatoes (2.847 KD/kg, ~$9.31/kg), a 41% difference. However, this disparity was not statistically significant at the 5% level (p = 0.055). Tomatoes are Kuwait’s most widely grown vegetable but account for 65% of the local demand (132,222 tons in 2019, PAAF, 2020). Nevertheless, inconsistent quality, market saturation, and post-harvest losses reduce the proportion of local tomatoes that reach consumers. Imports are often perceived as more uniform and reliable, leading retailers to maintain a mix of imported and local supplies. A portion of local tomatoes likely ends up wasted due to the market being flooded and causing a huge drop in prices (Arab Times, 2024). Onion Only imported onions were available in the survey, averaging 1.845 KD/kg (~$6.03/kg). Local onion production was just 7,120 tons in 2019 — covering only 6% of consumption (PAAF, 2020). Imports, primarily from India totaling ~71% of Kuwait’s onion consumption (Bhagat et al., 2022), dominate the Kuwaiti onion market. The storability of onions helps maintain prices and reduces the reliance on bulk shipments via sea freight reduces transport costs, making imported onions competitively priced despite limited local supply. Conclusion This study offers valuable insights into the economic viability of organic farming in Kuwait, providing strategic guidance for farmers, consumers, and policymakers. The findings indicate that certain high-margin crops, such as garlic, onions, and cucumbers, hold significant profitability for farmers, with cucumbers offering a particularly stable, year-round income stream. Farmers can further maximize their returns by incorporating companion planting, which increases yield per square meter, especially in greenhouse environments. For consumers, the data reveals that opting for local organic produce, particularly lettuce and tomatoes, can lead to economic benefits while also supporting national food security and reducing dependency on imports. The study also highlights critical policy implications, suggesting that government support through subsidies and market incentives could help bridge the price gap between organic and conventional produce, thereby encouraging broader consumer adoption. However, a key limitation of this research was the absence of local data for certain vegetables, which hindered a more comprehensive analysis. Future studies should address this by including a wider range of produce and investigating other factors that influence market dynamics, such as seasonal price fluctuations, production costs, and consumer preferences. These findings provide a foundation for developing a national organic certification and market strategy aligned to foster a more robust, sustainable, and affordable local organic farming sector in Kuwait. Season)
Introduction

Organic agriculture represents a farming system grounded in ecological principles, emphasizing the interaction with natural processes to achieve the sustainable production of safe and high-quality food. In contrast to conventional systems that rely heavily on synthetic inputs, organic farming employs practices such as crop rotation, compost application, biological pest management, and organic soil amendments to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance (Ashari 2020; John & Babu 2021; Reganold & Wachter, 2016; Sule & Nwagboso 2019). This approach contributes to improved consumer health through reduced exposure to chemical residues, while also supporting environmental sustainability by enhancing biodiversity, improving soil structure, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (Gomiero, 2018); Raptou & Manolas, 2022).

Although organic farming has deep traditional roots, the Green Revolution of the mid-twentieth century shifted global agriculture toward synthetic inputs, including chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which substantially increased yields but also caused significant environmental and health challenges such as pesticide poisoning, biodiversity loss, water contamination, and eutrophication (Pimentel, 1996). These concerns later renewed interest in sustainable production systems, leading to the establishment of international certification schemes such as USDA Organic in the United States, the Soil Association in the United Kingdom, and BioSuisse in Switzerland, which provide regulatory frameworks that ensure credibility, traceability, and consumer trust (USDA, 2024; Soil Association, 2024; BioSuisse, 2024).

Globally, organic agriculture has expanded rapidly over the years due to consumers associating organic foods with better health values, environmental support, and enhanced taste, which heavily influences eagerness to pay premium prices (Aschemann-Witzel & Zielke, 2017). Similarly, Europe’s organic market was valued at USD 64.5 billion in 2020, dominated by Germany and France (Schlatter et al., 2024). In the Middle East, organic production and consumption are growing steadily. In the Middle East, organic agriculture continues to display considerable growth. Saudi Arabia’s organic market was valued at approximately USD 57 million in 2018 (about €52 million), and packaged organic food and beverages alone reached USD 54.2 million in 2021, with a projected increase to USD 73.2 million by 2025 representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% (Global Organic Trade Guide, 2022).

More broadly, the Saudi organic food and beverages sector was estimated at USD 3.0 billion in 2024, with forecasts projecting growth to USD 9.1 billion by 2033 (CAGR 11.8%) (IMARC Group, 2025). In the UAE, the organic market was estimated at USD 32.6 million in 2021, expected to reach USD 38.9 million by 2025 (CAGR 4.3%) (Global Organic Trade Guide, 2022); other forecasts place the 2022 market value at USD 38.6 million with projected growth to USD 55.1 million by 2029 (CAGR 6.1%) (BlueWeave Consulting, 2023).

Consumer surveys in Kuwait highlight health, nutrition, environmental impact, and taste as primary motivators for purchasing organic products (AlTarrah et al., 2024; Elmi et al., 2019). However, affordability remains a key barrier, as willingness to pay for price premiums is strongly influenced by income levels (AlTarrah et al., 2024; Elmi et al., 2019). This trend also aligns with broader behavioral studies showing that consumers’ choices around organic foods are influenced by positive drivers such as perceived health benefits and environmental responsibility, while at the same time being limited by higher prices and reduced availability (Tandon et al., 2020). Despite this increasing demand, the domestic organic sector remains underdeveloped. At present, only 25 hectares are certified organic under one producer (FiBL, 2024), and most organic products—alongside a significant share of conventional vegetables—are imported due to limited arable land and the absence of national certification standards (Abdullah et al., 2021).

Consumer studies indicate that imported products are often preferred over local alternatives, largely due to perceptions of superior quality and affordability (Shebaib & Hussein, 2024).

Materials and Methods

2.1. Product and Market Selection

This study was designed to assess retail price differences for five vegetables in Kuwait (cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and garlic) due to their importance in daily use and compared on two levels.

2.2. Price Calculations and Data Standardization

All collected data were subsequently cleaned by removing any duplicates, particularly when companies listed similar or repeated products.

<img enhance comparability for international readers, all prices were also converted to USD equivalents.

2.3. Statistical Analysis

All prices collected were grouped and the mean for the duration of the survey were calculated for the two comparisons stated above (organic vs. conventional and local vs. imported). To check if there was a significant difference between the price categories mentioned, Welch's t-test was selected as the primary statistical method to assess price differences in this study due to its robustness and suitability for the dataset. This approach has been effectively employed in similar studies examining food price variation, such as Hepburn, Oluwadero, & Karpyn (2024), which used Welch's t-test to assess changing food prices in the Bahamas. Further emphasizing the application of the Welch’s t-test instead of the standard Student’s t-test which does not account for unequal sample sizes, a critical consideration in this study, as the number of observations varied between categories.

For statistical comparisons IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 29) was used for comparing organic price premium percentage to conventional vegetables, and price difference between local and imported products (organic and conventional products were compiled together). Mean differences

A Welch's t-test confirmed that the price differences between organic and conventional products were statistically significant (p < 0.05) across all five crops surveyed (Table 1).

Garlic

Garlic had the highest organic prices amongst all surveyed crops in Kuwait, and these were statistically different from their conventional counterparts (p < 0.05) (Table 1).

Lettuce

Lettuce retail value between organic and conventional was statistically significantly different (p < 0.05) with the average of organic lettuce costing 4.140 KD/kg (~$13.53/kg) and conventionally grown lettuce at 1.660 KD/kg (~$5.43/kg) (Table 1).

Onion

Onions showed to have the second lowest average organic and conventional prices of 3.430 KD/kg ($11.21) and 1.090 KD/kg ($3.56),respectively (Table1). The data also resulted in a significant difference (p < 0.05) between organic and conventional onions with the second highest premium of 214% (Table 1).

Tomato

The lowest price premium was found in tomatoes with an organic average price of 4.730 KD/kg ($15.47) and conventional price of 2.010 KD/kg ($6.58) , a 2.480 KD/kg ($8.10) difference (Table 1). Mean Difference

Prices between local and imported vegetables were significantly different overall.

4.2.2. Crop-by-Crop Analysis

Cucumber

Cucumbers were the only crop with exclusively local data in this survey and could not be compared for price differences during the duration of the survey.

Lettuce

Imported lettuce was significantly more expensive than locally produced lettuce (p = 0.021).

Garlic

Garlic emerged as the highest-priced imported vegetable, averaging 4.172 KD/kg (~$13.64/kg).

Tomato

Tomatoes showed higher average prices for imports (4.019 KD/kg, ~$13.14/kg) compared to local tomatoes (2.847 KD/kg, ~$9.31/kg), a 41% difference.

Onion

Only imported onions were available in the survey, averaging 1.845 KD/kg (~$6.03/kg).

Conclusion

This study offers valuable insights into the economic viability of organic farming in Kuwait, providing strategic guidance for farmers, consumers, and policymakers.

Declarations

Conflict of interest

The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper.

Author Contribution

Abdulrahman Mohammed Al-Fraih conceptualized and designed the study, conducted the statistical analysis, interpreted the data, and wrote the full manuscript.

Organic Pricing and Import Differentials in Kuwait’s Vegetable Market (2023 & 2024 Winter Season)
["v1
[84888
]}
