Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical effect of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) in the treatment of dysmenorrheal associated with adenomyosis. Methods Thirty-two patients with moderate to severe dysmenorrheal associated with adenomyosis has LNG-IUS inserted in their uterine and then were compared between themselves. The change of verbal rating scale (VRS) scores of their severity of dysmenorrhea before insertion and 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 months after insertion were compared. The menstrual blood volume, uterine size and CA-125 level in blood serum were also compared. Results After the insertion, the VRS score in thirty-one patients dropped obviously from (2.5±0.4) to (0.4±0.3) after 24 months, showing statistically significant difference with that before the insertion (P0.01). Besides, the menstrual blood volume was significantly decreased (P0.01), the uterine size was significantly reduced (P0.05), and the CA125 level was significantly lowered (P0.01). Conclusion LNG-IUS is quite effective for treating moderate to severe dysmenorrhea associate with adenomyosis.
