Abstract

A novel polymer containing β-cyclodextrin, α-cyclodextrin, γ -cyclodextrin and chitosan (cy-clodextrin-chitosan) was synthesized, characterized and used for extracting two kinds of pharmaceuticals ibuprofen and progesterone. This polymer is amorphous and porous with a high swelling capacity. The cyclodextrin-chitosan polymer exhibits high extraction capacity towards progesterone and ibuprofen. Add to that, the effect of different operator variables was studied and discussed (i.e., the effects of contact time, solute concentration, pH, ionic strength and temperature). In this study adsorption kinetic was investigated, where it follows a pseudo-second order model in case of ibuprofen and progesterone.
