Abstract
India ink was placed in the uterine wall or lumen of mares during diestrus to determine whether uterine lymphatics drain particulate matter from uterine tissue and whether there is a qualitative difference in the rate of uterine lymphatic drainage in reproductively normal, or resistant (R), mares and mares susceptible to endometritis (S). Mares were killed 24, 48, or 72 h after ink placement to evaluate uptake. India ink injected into the uterine wall of 2 R mares diffused through the uterus and was seen grossly in lymphatic vessels in the broad ligaments and in the uterine, medial iliac, and aortic lymph nodes by 48 h postinjection. An acute inflammatory reaction occurred that was most prominent at injection sites. When 40 ml of India ink was infused into the uterine lumen, R mares cleared most or all of the India ink. Ink was grossly visible in the aortic and medial iliac lymph nodes of all but the 24-h R mare. In contrast, S mares did not absorb much ink. The 48- and 72-h S mares had 150–300 ml of a thick tarry substance present in the lumen. The 24-h mare had 45 ml of a less viscous fluid. Only lymph nodes from the 72-h S mare were black. All mares exhibited an acute, diffuse, neutrophilic endometritis, which was most severe in S mares. It was concluded that uterine lymphatics drain particulate matter from the uterine lumen during diestrus. Lymph node uptake of ink was slower in S mares. India ink in the endometrium and uterine lumen induced an inflammatory response which was prolonged in S mares.
