A FOCUS-PDCA quality improvement model to reduce perioperative analgesic pump residuals

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of applying the FOCUS-PDCA quality improvement model in reducing the perioperative analgesic pump surplus. We applied the FOCUS-PDCA quality improvement model to analyse the causes of perioperative analgesic pump residuals, then developed an improvement strategy and compared residuals before and after implementation. After the implementation of the FOCUS-PDCA quality improvement model, the abandonment rate of analgesic pumps decreased from 31.35% to 9.72%, and the total amount of residual volume decreased from 12,350 ml to 4,356.9 ml. Therefore, Thus, the FOCUS-PDCA quality improvement model succeeded in significantly reducing the perioperative analgesic pumps residuals and guaranteeing the quality of medical safety of perioperative analgesic pumps.
