Gamma ray irradiation behavior and damage mechanism of the “Pandan” type Polarization-Maintaining Optical Fibers

Abstract
Gamma ray irradiation experiments were carried out on “Panda” type polarization-maintaining optical fiber made in China, and the relationship between irradiation induced loss and dose and dose rate at 1310 nm of the polarization-maintaining optical fiber was studied. By means of XPS, EPR, FTIR and loss spectrum analysis, the damage mechanism of gamma ray irradiated “Panda” type polarization-maintaining optical fiber is discussed. The results show that for the reason of gamma ray irradiation, the active particles .H are produced in the coating material, and the impurity defects of Si-OH are formed with the products of SiO 2 irradiated by gamma ray. The concentration of impurity and defect in Si-OH is the key factor that affects the attenuation coefficient of polarization-maintaining optical fiber with “Panda” type at 1310nm.
