The Effects of Training and Progressive Relaxation Exercises On Anxiety Level After Hysterectomy

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of progressive relaxation exercises and training after hysterectomy on women’s anxiety levels. This study was carried out as quasi experimental, pretest and post-test with control groups. The study was carried at patients’ houses and Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of Aziziye Research Hospital of Suleyman Demirel Medical Centre and Nene Hatun Maternity Hospital. The study was carried on 34 experimental and 32 control group women who had hysterectomy due to benign reasons and patients were chosen by nonprobability convenience sampling method. The data were collected between July 2007-May 2008. In gathering of data, personal information form and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used. In the assessment of data, percentage distributions, chi-square, t test in independent groups and, matched t test were used. It was detected that score average of state anxiety pre test in experimental group was 40.9±6.3, and that post test one was 27.6±3.7, and the distinction between the groups was significantly meaningful (p=0.001), and that state anxiety pre test score average in control group was 41.1±7.8, while post test score average was 40.4±8.3 and the distinction between the groups was insignificant (p=0.625). It was found that the training and progressive relaxation exercises after hysterectomy are effective in reducing of state anxiety.
