Using AI to Broaden the Reach and Inclusivity of Psychological Publications

Abstract
Hernandez’s (2025) editorial in Perspectives on Psychological Science (PoPS) outlines promising future directions for making the journal more inclusive, particularly by exploring new publication formats. While these suggestions (e.g., audio formats, non-English publications) are inspiring, they could also be viewed as yet another task on the ever-growing list of academic responsibilities. Here, however, we argue that many goals that Hernandez (2025) outlined can be achieved, or at least strongly facilitated, using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. We discuss how AI can support the creation of audio summaries, multilingual publications, and other content that makes research more accessible and engaging to broader audiences. We provide AI-generated proof-of-concept examples for each aspect, such as a podcast version of our commentary. While using AI carries risks and ethical challenges, we believe these examples highlight the potential of AI to enhance the inclusivity and reach of academic publishing, which should be considered both within PoPS and beyond.
