Abstract

for the event. Charlie received several\nplaques and citations, as well as a beautiful\npiece> of Steuben glass. Members of 'The\nGang' present were; Ben Beasley, Ted &\nEleanor Bogart, Ray & Charlotte Brisach,\nGeorge Duehring, Pete & Betty King, Herb\n& Site Mitchell, Andy & Ellen O'Meara, Bob\nPorter and his daughter, and the Wootens.\nCharlie prevailed on GEN Bernstein to give\nhim a pass for the occasion (accompanied by\nBernie himself) and made a graceful speech\nof acknowledgment." As aforesaid, Cavalry-men\ndie hard.\n'31 COL Philip B. Stiness\n4131 Harrison Slraot, NW.\nWashington, DC 20015\nI must begin this column with a few sad\nnotes. I must report the death of Hector\nTruly on 29 Jan in San Ant. Danny Workizer\ndied in Sarasota on 14 Jan and Budge How-ard\ndied in DC on 4 May. I have heard from\nDon Buchwald that John Feagin is in the\nhospital in San Ant and would be pleased\nto get cards from the Class. Charlie & Cora\nDensfords' son Butch, who was in the auto\naccident, died in Apr.\nIn Apr, Deac Roller called up to say that\nhe was in DC playing golf with Don Arm-strong,\nWarren Hoover, Ockie Krueger, Bill\nHardick, Trick Troxel and many others. I\ndon't know who was best, but Deac said\nthat Don took 2 bits away from him. Deac's\ntravel trailer is on the bunk again having\nlost a wheel or so. He also stopped by Pipe\nCreek and saw Charlie Densford in Jun, so\nI guess the trailer is running again. A card\nfrom Ruth & Dick Lawson from Scotland\nwhere they came after a week or 2 in Ire-land.\nDick made a hole-in-one just before\nthey left on the trip, so now he has been\neyeing every golf course for a good hole, even\nincluding St. Andrews which will be on their\nitinerary. Charlie Hoy was in DC for me-morial\nservices for Martha. As Bill & Fran\nDick say, Charlie was willing, ready and\nable to relieve any golfers of their spare\nchange by a putting contest. George &\nTommie Speidel are also touring here and\nthere. Tommie has gone to Korea to visit\nson Richard; will tour some of the Orient\nand then will come back to Seattle to meet\nGeorge. Then they will take a 3-week tour of\nAK. NC is just not big enough to hold\nthem in check. I just received a card from\nTommie in Seoul, where she says the traffic\n\\\ni\nid\n1\n1931: The whole crowd.\n1931: Wirak and Pres, Lake Sumter Com-munity\nColl.\nSEPTEMBER 1977\n1931: Elaine & John Leary, Douglas, AZ,\n13 Apr 77.\nis like driving in Pittsburgh before they\ncleaned it up.\nEd & Nina Parker are back in Albany after\nspending a fine winter in AZ. They saw Jim\n& Marge Stroker on their annual trip to\nthe courses in CA. Ted and Nina drove down\nto Green Valley to visit George & Jane\nElegar. George was perky when they were\nthere and they had a very good visit. Ted\nalso notes the record the Class had with the\nClass gift items if you read all items in the\nASSEMBLY.\nLes & Ruth Kunish made a long trip from\nManitowoc to the Rio Grande, to Seattle and\nback, to get away from the WI winter. They\nvisited many classmates on the way and I\nwill tell you about them. They popped in on\nMickey & Maxine Moore in Pine Bluff. Ac-cording\nto Les, Mickey was slim, svelte and\nlooks and acts just as he did when he was\non the track team at the Academy, and\nMaxine was keeping up with Mickey. In\nSan Ant they visited Shorty & Alice Roth-rock\nand talked with Gordon Blake on the\nphone. In El Paso they called in on Dutch\n& Dee Spangler. I understand that Dutch is\na lapidariast and does work that would do\ncredit to a professional. They also saw Dean\n& Martha Herman in their new house which\nwould win a prize in any Homes and Gar-den\ncontest. They called Carl Kohls. In Doug-lass\nit was John & Elaine Leary, both looking\nwell and healthy, and a talk with George\nElegar. In Tucson it was Forrest & Betty\nCaraway, with Forrest in good morale and\nspirits and Betty still much as she was when\na debutante at Ft Sam Houston. In Las\nVegas it was Chet & Mary Landaker. Chet\nhas turned in his suit after 16 years of teach-ing\nat the U. of NV. Chet is now fully\n"retarded" as are most of us now. Bo Dougher\nand Johnny Cave were contacted in Santa\nBarbara, with Bo still working on his recov-ery\nand Johnny sounded fit as a fiddle. Pop\nSutherland was baching it in Vacaville, as\nPeggy was visiting in the East. Pop, by the\nway, has built an electric organ that would\ndo justice to any conservatory. We do have\ndifferent ways of expressing ourselves, don't\nwe. Dutch polishes stones, I work on doll\nhouses and Pop builds an electric organ.\nIn Seattle, Les and Ruth spent several days\nvisiting Charlie & Tommie Howze. One of\nthe highlights was a dinner with the Howzes\nand Coburn & Jeanne Smith. In Boise, they\nvisited Jim & Lil Maloney. If you could see\nthe array of hunting and fishing gear that\nthey have, you would know why they enjoy\nID. Thank you Les, that was a nice letter\nand gave everybody a good glimpse of some\nof our other mates.\nA letter from Herb & Vesta Mansfield\nsays they haven't been traveling much lately.\nExcept, of course, for trips to Ft Ord, a\nhundred miles away just to play golf with\n1931: Roger and Dick: Roommates 50 years\nlater.\n75\nFrom the Collection of the U.S. Military Academy Library
