[The different effects of estrogen and drugs suppressing ovulation on tolerance to carbohydrates].

22 patients with climateric hemorrhage and glandular hyperplasis of the endometrium were treated by either infecundin (11 patients) at 1 tablet over the course of 21 days starting with the 5th day of the menstrual cycle or with diethylstilbestrol at 3 mg daily over the course of 13-16 days starting from the 2nd day of the menstrual cycle after which they received 250 mg of 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate. To determine the effects on carbohydrate tolerance the glucose level was measured in both groups before and after the treatment. Infecundin was noted to cause a decrease in the level of carbohydrate tolerance after 6-8 months of use. Estrogens (octestrol or diethylstibestrol) in combination with progestagens did not exert an unfavorable influence on carbohydrate exchange; on the contrary they improved the tolerance to carbohydrates in those patients with a primary illness as well as in those in whom diabetic-type deteriorations arose after the use of infecundin.
