The Predator: A Vision Science Perspective

I present a discussion of what we can conclude about the visual system of the Predator, who is the main antagonist in a series of horror/sci-fi/action movies spanning 30 years. The Predator movies each provide examples of the character’s first-person view of the world, which I argue offers the opportunity to try and draw conclusions about the mechanisms supporting aspects of his visual processing based on his subjective experience. Additional features of Predator physiology (his ability to achieve temporary invisibility and the biofluorescent properties of his blood) are also discussed from the perspective of visual ecology. Overall, besides providing important insights into a timeless villain, this discussion also demonstrates how even brief moments in movies, television and other media can be the basis for interesting discussion of vision science principles.
