This study investigated differential gene expression between eutopic endometrium and ectopic endometriosis tissue to identify potential molecular markers for the disease. Researchers collected samples from women in the proliferative phase of their menstrual cycle, using hysteroscopy for control tissue and laparoscopy for endometriosis lesions, followed by analysis with Atlas Human 1,2 Array technology. The results revealed that out of 1176 genes examined, only a small fraction were shared between the two tissues, with specific up- and down-regulated genes identified as key differentiators. The authors concluded that these distinct genetic profiles provide insight into the basic molecular mechanisms of endometriosis and may explain reduced implantation rates in affected patients. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically focusing on genomic differences between normal endometrial tissue and ectopic endometriosis lesions.
