Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS) Following SARS CoV-2 Vaccinations; A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Background: Although SARS CoV-2 vaccinations are generally safe, there are growing concerns about their link to a potentially life-threatening condition called multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS) in Adults and Children. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the incidence, severity, treatment, and outcomes of MIS following SARS CoV-2 vaccinations.Methods: Seven databases: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (WOS) were searched besides manual search for non-retrieved studies through the database search starting from March 2nd, 2022. The inclusion criteria include primary studies where adults or paediatrics who received any COVID-19 vaccination developed Multisystem inflammatory syndrome afterwards. We excluded any articles that did not meet these criteria as well as duplicates and studies with only abstract or unavailable full text. The risk of bias was assessed by using Joanna Briggs Institute manual (JBI). Results were divided according to study design and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.Results: Of the 1366 studies identified by database search, we retrieved 77 MIS cases after SARS CoV-2 vaccinations. Out of these 77 cases, 52 were children, while 25 involved adults. The average age of the cases included in this review was 18 (1-67) years, with the most being male (M: F 3.1:1). The cardiovascular system was the most affected system by MIS (36, 97.3%), followed by the gastrointestinal tract (32, 86.5%).Conclusion: MIS after SARS CoV-2 vaccinations can be fatal, but the incidence is low. We advocate prompt recognition of MIS and ruling out the mimickers are critical in the patient’s early recovery.Funding Information: None.Declaration of Interests: We declare no competing interests.
