Metabolic and carbohydrate characteristics of different phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome.
This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors in 687 women with polycystic ovary syndrome, comparing those diagnosed under Androgen Excess Society criteria against normoandrogenemic PCOS patients. The analysis revealed that women meeting the Androgen Excess definition had a significantly higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol compared to their normoandrogenemic counterparts. While glucose intolerance did not differ significantly between groups, the findings indicate that cardiovascular risk profiles vary substantially across different PCOS phenotypes defined by Rotterdam criteria.
