Abstract

The comparison between Kotlin and Java for Android development has become increasingly relevant with Kotlin's rise as the preferred language for modern Android apps. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of both languages from multiple perspectives, including syntax, productivity, null safety, concurrency handling, and build performance. Kotlin, introduced in 2017 as an officially supported language by Google, presents modern features such as reduced boilerplate code, enhanced null safety, and powerful asynchronous capabilities through coroutines. In contrast, Java, a long-standing staple in Android development, continues to be widely used due to its stability, extensive ecosystem, and backward compatibility. This study compares both languages in the context of Android development, examining their respective strengths and weaknesses, and discussing practical scenarios where one might be preferred over the other. Additionally, the paper delves into developer productivity, code quality, and real-world adoption of Kotlin, providing insights into future trends in Android development. By exploring these factors, the paper aims to offer a deeper understanding of how the choice between Kotlin and Java can impact Android development projects.
