Effects of an Emotional Release Intervention Studied by Hekalogy on Serum Serotonin Concentrations: A Prospective Pre-Post Study

Abstract

Abstract Serotonin (5-HT) is a critical neuromodulator for affective homeostasis, and alterations in its levels are linked to the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Given the limited evidence on conscious emotional release interventions, this study evaluated the Hekalogy model as an inducer of psychophysiological balance measurable through peripheral biomarkers. This explanatory study used a pre-experimental design with 30 volunteers attending the "Chakra 3" event (Medellín, Colombia). Serum serotonin was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) under strict fasting conditions, with baseline (T0) and 24-hour post-intervention (T1) measurements. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the paired Student's t-test with a 95% confidence level. A statistically significant increase in mean serotonin was observed, rising from 105.66 ng/mL to 113.06 ng/mL (p < 0.001), representing a 7% systemic increase. Subjects with reduced baseline levels showed a 34% increase in the lower threshold. Regression analysis indicated that the intervention explained 90.4% of the observed positive variance (R² = 0.904). The Hekalogy-based intervention acts as a biological model that optimizes the peripheral serotonergic system and suggests regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The results validate emotional management as a clinical tool in contemporary integrative medicine.
