Abstract
Chronic pelvic pain is a common disorder among women and a frequent cause for doctors visits. Etiologies for chronic pelvic pain may include the gastrointestinal tract, the urologic system, the reproductive system, the musculoskeletal system and/or the nervous system; however, a definitive diagnosis is not always present. Diagnosis is mostly based on a thorough history and physical examination; laboratory data and/or imaging are often unnecessary. Treatment can be directed at both the specific sources of pain and at chronic pain in general. Details regarding diagnosis and treatment are discussed regarding some of the most common diagnoses contributing to chronic pelvic or urogenital pain: endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome, painful bladder syndrome and vulvar vestibulodynia.
