Abstract

SummaryInterim findings are reported from a planned 3-year study of the psychological, hormonal and plasma tryptophan changes occurring in women following hysterectomy and who have been treated with either piperazine oestrone sulphate (1.5 mg b.d.) or placebo for 6 months or longer. In patients treated with piperazine oestrone sulphate, there was a highly significant reduction in depressive symptoms, and a significant increase in total plasma tryptophan. In contrast to the hormone-treated patients, the placebo-treated group showed no such changes, but a significant increase in plasma luteinizing hormone.
