preprint
OA: closed
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the psychological impact of social contagion, with a specific focus on sexual behavior in the era of social media and how these increase the stress levels of all individuals. This qualitative study employs a combination of in-depth literal analysis to understand the dynamics of social contagion and social media in shaping sexual behavior that impacts the balance of life. The study found instances of social contagion, where individuals adopted certain behaviors or identities based on what they observed on social media. The psychological impact of this contagion varied among individuals, with some experiencing confusion, anxiety, and even distress. The findings reveal that social contagion can affect sexual behavior in various ways, such as creating unrealistic expectations, inducing peer pressure, promoting risky or harmful practices, or undermining self-esteem and identity. The findings also indicate that negative changes in sexual behavior can increase stress levels by causing emotional, physical, or social problems, such as anxiety, guilt, shame, infection, injury, or isolation. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a qualitative exploration of the psychological impact of social contagion in the context of sexual behavioral change that affects stress levels. It offers valuable insights for scholars, educators, and policymakers interested in understanding the role of social media in shaping individual identities and behaviors.
