Abstract

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It occurs in 10- 15% women in reproductive age. Endometriosis is the most common cause of chronic pelvic pain in women, unresponsive to treatment of non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs and oral contraceptives.The most common symptoms of the disease are: progressive or acquired dysmenorrheal, cyclic and acyclic pain, urological symptoms, dyspareunia (in sexually active women), gastrointestinal complaints. When evaluating an women with suspected endometriosis, a imaging studies (magnetic resonance, ultrasonography) and gynecological examination (vaginal or rectal examination). Moreover, in diagnostic process laparoscopy should be carried out in all women with chronic pelvic pain unresponsive to medical treatment.Initial therapy of endometriosis in women involves: surgical methods (laparotomy/ laparoscopy), hormonal pharmacotherapy (progestion- only protocols, combined contraceptives), GnRH agonist, alternative pain therapies, non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs and psychotherapy.
