High Variability in Nicotine Analog Contents, Misleading Labeling, and Artificial Sweetener in New E-Cigarette Products Marketed as “FDA-Exempt”
The paper analyzed newly marketed “FDA-exempt” e-cigarette products containing synthetic nicotine analogs (6-methyl nicotine, 6MN) or nicotinamide (“Nixotine”/“Nixamide”), using gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry to measure nicotine analogs, flavor contents, and an added sweetener. For “SpreeBar,” products labeled as containing 5% 6-methyl nicotine contained only 0.61–0.64%, and for “Nixotine,” measured nicotinamide levels were 7–46% lower than declared; notably, small amounts of 6-methyl nicotine were detected even though it was not listed on the label. The authors also found the artificial sweetener neotame in all SpreeBar samples (0.20–0.86 μg/mg). The study’s main caveat is that it is a chemical composition analysis of selected products rather than a clinical study of health outcomes. This paper does not explicitly discuss endometriosis or adenomyosis; it was included in the corpus via a keyword match in the upstream search index.
