I find that searches are significantly concentrated on match days and during football season periods. I also document that the proportion of search volumes is negatively correlated with states’ GDP, HDI, and level of education. This finding indicates that poorer regions gamble more. Moreover, I report that online searches negatively predict future household savings at the country level. More specifically, the increase in online searches from a typical day with no football matches to a typical match day produces a decrease in national household savings of 2.0 MM BRL (400,000 USD) in the following four days. This influence is robust to a battery of tests. Overall, these results indicate that online searches are a consistent proxy for sports gambling sentiment and suggest that online sports betting is linked to negative economic outcomes at the country level.
