Pulmonary endometriosis: an unusual cause of hemoptysis
CT scans acquired during and two weeks after menstruation can aid in confirming and localizing pulmonary endometriosis as a cause of hemoptysis.

This paper describes a 29-year-old woman with a 5-month history of cough and recurrent episodes of hemoptysis that occurred in synchrony with menstruation, with no notable findings on physical exam or routine labs. Chest CT performed during menses showed two small cavitary nodules with ground-glass opacities that largely resolved two weeks later except for a small thin-walled cavity, and bronchoscopy during menstruation showed fresh blood at the entrance of the right lower lobe bronchus; the diagnosis of pulmonary endometriosis was suspected based on these catamenial findings and later confirmed by histopathology showing uterine endometrial cells with stromal components. The authors note CT’s nonspecific imaging features and emphasize that imaging during menses is more informative because lesions can change size or disappear between menstrual phases. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it provides a case report and diagnostic justification for pulmonary (thoracic) endometriosis presenting as catamenial hemoptysis.
