Abstract
Endometriosis affects 10% of women, with pelvic pains making up 20% of gynaecological activity. Hence the surgical treatment of endometriosis is a common challenge in Gynaecological practice with the level of proficiency and competence required, wide given the range in severity that a surgeon may face. With competing interests, there is a move from the traditional apprenticeship model to a competency bases model of training and assessment. This requires a far greater reliance on a formal training curriculum and use of genetic tools on offer, including away from the patient. This chapter aims to inform both the trainee and those wishing to become proficient in endometriosis surgery the curriculum required. The chapter assesses the current limitations in training and the tools that are available to overcome this. This includes the formal course approaches that are available, to the various box trainers on offer, from simple box to augments and virtual reality systems using dry models and wet tissues to replicate the challenges of laparoscopic surgery. Assessment tools that are validated and can be used in vivo with reproducibility that allows consistency between trainers are also presented. The conclusion is to facilitate training of the local as well and the advanced endometriosis surgeons of the future.
