Effect of levonorgestrel - releasing intrauterine system in the treatment of adenomyosis

Abstract

Objective To assess the clinical efficacy of levonor -gestrel -releasing intrauterine system (LNG - IUS) in the treatment of adenomyosis. Methods Twenty - five patients with adenomyosis were treated with LNG- IUS, and choosed another 30 patients as the control group to give oral gestrinone. The menstrual blood volume, severity of dysmenorthea and uterine volume were observed one, three and six months later. Results After six months treatment of LNG - IUS, dysmenorrhea was completely catabatic, the menstrual blood volume reduced significantly, the endometrium become thinner (P < 0. 01) ,and the uterine volume was decreased, hemoglobin increased and CA - 125 decreased. Compared with the control group, the case groups not only have good effect, fewer side effects but also the treatment lasted for a long time. Concin-sions LNG- IUS is an effective and safe method in the treatment of adenomyosis. Key words: Adenomyosis ;  Levonorgestrel ;
