The paper analyzes data from the Italian PASSI survey collected from 2008–2015 to describe how educational level and other socioeconomic factors are associated with having undergone hysterectomy in women aged 25–64. It reports that hysterectomy prevalence increases with age (from 0.6% at ages 40–44 to 6.6% at 60–64) and, controlling for age and economic conditions, the risk is about double among women with no education or elementary schooling compared with university graduates. It also finds excess differences for foreign women versus Italian women and for non-employed women versus employed women, and notes that hysterectomy is considered at risk for inappropriate use due to high variability across countries, regions, hospitals, time, and social status. The paper does not explicitly discuss endometriosis or adenomyosis; it was included in the corpus via a keyword match in the upstream search index.
