Measures of teacher burnout, student problem behaviors, student gratitude, and ERI were recorded for 441 teachers. The results revealed that student gratitude partially mediated the association between student problem behaviors and teacher burnout/depersonalization. Furthermore, the ERI moderated the effect of student gratitude. In fact, when the ERI was high (ERI ≥ 2), student gratitude did not significantly predict teacher burnout/depersonalization. Conversely, when ERI was low (ERI < 2), student gratitude was negatively correlated with teacher burnout/depersonalization. These findings suggest a protecting effect of student gratitude on teacher burnout and an effect of student problem behaviors and ERI on teacher burnout.
